Claregalway is a small town approximately 10km from Galway on the Galway to Tuam road. The Clare River from which it takes its name runs through the centre of the town. There are some ancient sites in Claregalway which are well worth a visit. Namely, Claregalway Friary which is an old ruins of a Franciscan Abbey which was built in 1290 by John de Cogan. Claregalway Castle which is presently being restored, is a 15th Century Clanricard Castle and is located on the shores of the Clare river. Cloonacauneen Castle is a splendid Tower House and is presently a Hotel.
