Portumna which means the landing of the oak tree is a beautiful town which borders Tipperary and located where the River Shannon enters Lough Derg. The bridge connecting Tipperary and Galway was completed in 1911 and designed by C. E. Stanier. It has two sections with the middle section supported by Hayess Island. Portumna Castle which dates back to 1618 was built by Richard de Burgo. The surrounding woodlands were taken over by the Forestry Service and the Office of Public Works are restoring the buildings and gardens. Others attractions worth visiting are Portumna Workhouse, Forest Park and Wildlife sanctuary and the Yew Walk In Portumna.
